Wildlife down south - BK

Permalink 10:58:55 pm, Categories: Feral Species, mammals, Native species

Last weekend Abdulla took myself and some visitors from UAE to the southern section of the island. We got some nice photographs of the Sand Gazelles. Below are just two. The rut will soon be underway.

Adhari drains

Permalink 07:16:08 pm, Categories: Native species

A very severe cleanout of the freshwater drains at Adhari was undertaken by the Municipality recently. It was so extensive and sudden that one could be forgiven for expecting nothing to survive. I (Brendan) popped down there on Saturday afternoon while the local soccer teams were busy nearby and spotted a few frogs and Terrapins which will hopefully spawn the next generation for the drains. That's assuming the little egrets and night herons don't get the last of them!!

Snakes Alive

Permalink 05:10:30 pm, Categories: Native species

(Post by Brendan) I finally saw my first live snake in Bahrain last week after 5 years. Abdulla identified it as a rat snake and tells me the Arab name translates as 'swift snake' as it moves so fast. BK

Couple of bad shots from saturday

Permalink 03:41:58 am, Categories: Feral Species, INSECTS, Native species

Had the big lens on but while out looking for birds these beauties came into view - couldn't resist being an avid clickologist. Not the best photos a 500mm is hardly a macro and these were a bugger to focus on. However nice to see and record til I can get some decent shots.

Attractive moth

Permalink 05:08:44 pm, Categories: INSECTS, Native species

This moth appeared on the outside panel of my back door. Not sure what species is but was struck by its very distinctive markings
My thanks to David Fuller who has since identified this as Crimson Speckled (Utetheisa pulchella)
