Day count over 140 - Backside Jasra

Permalink 12:25:20 am, Categories: Latest Obs recieved

Had started my day at Adhari chasing Kingfishers but with no luck - so decided to go to Jasra on the way Brendan telephoned to say he already had 60 Hypocolius, they had moved out by the time I arrived so we hung around til nine and clocked another 21 arriving in the same area plus a large numbers of Song Thrushes. Brendan went off to play a round of golf and I returned at 2-45 in the afternoon to see if any returned over sixty did. We think the area is more a staging post than a roost which seems to be itself behind the walls of one of the VIP gardens in the area.

Time to get out and check old haunts to see if they have arrived or can be found - it used to be easy but the loss of the Saar roost last year has turned the task into a ghost hunt

Good numbers still present- BK

Abdulla and I were up early this morning trying to net grey hypocolius in Jazra. We counted 110 birds but failed to catch this time. Below are two shots of the birds.

100-120 birds seen - BK

Today was a good day for spotting hypocolius. I dropped into the new site at Jasra at 7am to see if any birds were present and found a local trapper there. He caught a bird which we acquired from him and duely ringed and released.
In the afternoon myself and Abdulla returned to see if there were any birds roosting. On the southeastern corner of the village we spotted 100-120 birds rising from a set of acacia trees and heading ESE towards Buri. While we didn't manage to find the roost, the pre-roost gathering was impressive. If you are intending to come to Bahrain to see hypocolius I suggest you concentrate on the Jasra area at any time of the day.

Below is the male bird we ringed.

I spotted this bird relaxing in a low bush
