English (IE)   House and Spanish Sparrows  -  Categories: Bahrain obs by BK  -  @ 04:29:31 pm

While I was out last weekend I staked out a leaky sprinkler at the chicken farm. The birds had already located it and were queueing up to get a drink in the heat. Here are some shots of Spanish and House sparrows for comparison. The fist two photographs are male and female House Sparrow to help you get your eye in!

.
This next shot below is of three House Sparrows quarrelling. The upper bird is a juvenile (see how bare it is under the wing!)
.

.
Then we get on to the male Spanish Sparrows (They're easy!).
.

.

.
Then it starts to get a little trickier! This is a juvenile male Spanish Sparrow
.

.
Then comes the female Spanish Sparrow!
.

.
Two Spanish Sparrow females squabbling!!
.

.
Note the yellow base to the bill!
When you get your eye in you can tell the female Spanish and House sparrows apart quite easily.
The Spanish Sparrows are bigger and have a different bill size and shape and if you look closely enough, they also have a different feather pattern.
.
And finally, a beautiful male Spanish Sparrow got curious and approached the car!

It was worth the wait!
