English (IE)   Wheatears are coming through in force  -  Categories: Bahrain obs by BK  -  @ 10:05:49 pm

It can be difficult to get out a take some photographs at this time of year as most of my free time is spent ringing migrants.

English (IE)   Black-winged Kite new species for Bahrain  -  Categories: Bahrain obs by BK  -  @ 10:03:51 pm

Yesterday afternoon Abdulla and I went to the chicken farm with a visiting birder from US. When we arrived Abdulla spotted a raptor which was different from the usual harriers. It hovered in the wind and folded its wings dropping directly down out of the sky and back up again. We quickly realised it was a kite. I managed to take a few distant photos of it in the fading light. This is the first record of Black-winged Kite in Bahrain and another first for the Bahrain list.

English (IE)   Crisp weather for the birds  -  Categories: Bahrain obs by BK  -  @ 09:32:50 pm

Today the temperatures dropped several degrees and everyone including the birds were feeling the wind chill. I parked next to some bushes in the shelter of a wall and saw some nice birds who had the same idea as myself. Trying to keep warm!

I haven't had much time to get out and take photographs lately as I am spending most of my free time ringing. I sneaked a couple of hours recently to see what I might see.

English (IE)   Desert Lark  -  Categories: Bahrain obs by BK  -  @ 09:08:28 pm

With so little suitable habitat in Bahrain some species, such as desert lark, are very resticted and always in danger of extirpation on the island. The jebel is the only site where you have a good chance of seeing them. I found just one pair after a brief search of the southern pavement on Saturday.
