A Mourning Chase

Permalink 08:18:46, Categories: Observation by Howard

Friday I picked John Walker up around 7.15, where to go what to see, a Mourning Wheatear was high on his list, in fact top of it. So I headed for the Jebel Dahkan and and what is normally an easy found wintering bird.

They proved elusive, in fact all most impossible to find but at least John was able to claim two firsts; Desert Lark and Redtailed Wheatear. In fact we turned up 4 or 5 Desert Larks and two Redtailed. We walked probed and cruised the area around the Jebel encountering some Falconers hacking a young Perigrine before returning several hours later to the point where we had started only to find a Mourning sitting on his expected perch where it remained for close inpection. A bit distant for a classic photo but nice views were had.

After the Jebel we headed to Hamalah and Buri to find a Bluethroat or two, I had seen several on Thursday at the same location however we failed but John did get close views of Redthroated Pipits at Buri another first for him.
