Bird Report -- I think what you have here Phellorinia herculanea
(= Phellorina inquinans, P. strobilina) This is a fairly common
stalked puffball of desert regions. There
are a few other similar stalked puffballs, so to confirm the ID, you
would have
to section a specimen to check the nature of the stipe and spore mass,
plus
examine the spores with a microscope

As this was the only example I could find I left it in the
field to spore naturally - It was found at the Saar Archeological
Site
