Still very hot, at the colony
activity is kept to a minimum, daily activity is restricted to bathing
and the days massed flight to fish. It is thought that most will pair
during this time although this has yet to be observed - Some birds show
at this time the white flash or filoplume behind but below the eye (not
as
illustrated in some guides see photo inset left). This could well be a
feature of old mature
males since only a small percentage of the birds display such plumage,
it disappears very quickly as the season develops. Unlike the white filoplumes of the neck back and rump that come
after but
remain until late in the breeding season. Those on the back are quite
extensive extending at least a third of the way up the body of the bird.
