"I obtained as old diary from my grandfather who sailed from France to join the Mesopotamian campaign in Persia in August 1917. He wasn't a birder but on entering The Gulf a bird came onboard, he drew a wee cartoon of it and my guess is, it was a Pied Kingfisher"
Given that the dairy states that they past the rocks called the "Devils Gates" the day before, most likely the islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs or even Abu Musa  (situated between the UAE and modern day Iran) this would put the observation close to Bahrain
