Cheeked Terns constantly skim the surface of the sea dipping their
breast feathers which retain water, they then return to the nest and
drip the
water over the egg the nest and all lining material. It is the cooling
effect of the process of evaporation rather than the water itself that
keeps the eggs cool. Birds dip every half hour or so throughout the
hottest
parts of the day
